Unfortunately the consensus of the two parties is that we need larger government. I don't think that such a stance can be defended intellectually. Very few people support outright socialism. But if we are not to have the government run the entire economy, it will have to stop somewhere. It is essential to the good health of our political system that we have a political party that is hostile to the social welfare state.

Chance of Republicans taking the House
The people who bet at Intrade Prediction Markets seem to think that the Republicans have a fairly good chance of taking the House of Representatives. With a chance of about 60% this a bit better than even odds. They give the Democrats about the same odds of retaining the White House. In the larger scheme of things, there is no such thing as a permanent majority. The only lasting changes are the ones favored by both political parties.
