Political Asylum for the Apostate

I was watching this conference from last December on apostasy, sharia law and human rights.  One issue that came up in the discussion was that people who left Islam should be granted political asylum if their country of origin killed people for this "offense".  I wanted to point out that I support this.  I'm looking into U.S. policy on this.  The Wikipedia article on political asylum is here.
