This event at the Brookings Institution confirms what I have been saying on this subject. The fighting has been drawn out due to Western intervention resulting in more casualties on both sides. Now our leaders are talking about further assistance to the armed rebellion, which was not supported by either the American public or the Arab League. It is difficult to see how the latter group would be likely to support this. They have already made statements that we have gone too far as it is.
This is likely to be seen as an attack by non-Muslim countries on a Muslim one and against Islam itself. The Libyan government and many autocratic governments in the region have an incentive to put exactly that kind of spin on this. Extremist terrorist groups will also find this to be useful in motivating attacks against people in countries that support this action.
