A Bright Spot in the Middle East

AFP: Hundreds protest against extremism in Tunis

In this article it struck me that the Salafists staged a violent attack against a screening of a movie "Neither Allah nor Master". That sounds like a rather radical title.

Actually the title was given in French, which is the original language of the phrase according to this article. The phrase comes from a French socialist and has been used by anarchists, particularly in Latin Europe.

When this first came to my attention, it sounded more radical, as if it were directed specifically against the Muslim Allah. I think that it would be a positive development for there to be a widespread, popular movement against Islam in traditionally Muslim countries, since Islam has been particularly harmful as far as suppressing scientific progress. The effect on Biology has been particularly damaging. Some Muslims have even called for the death of people who argue in favor of evolution.

Some might argue that Islam and science are compatible. I cannot honestly concur with this or any other idea about what constitutes true Islam. Any position on this subject presupposes that Islam is valid in the first place. In order for me to take this position, I would have to be a Muslim. If anyone wants to argue that Islam and evolution are compatible, don't let me stop you.

However, I have no interest in the survival of Islam. My interest here is in the progress of science. Whether Islam is compatible with evolution is not an issue that I have to deal with, since I believe that Islam is false in any case. I see people to converting from Islam to atheism is a positive development. If it is possible that some Muslims will come to see Islam and evolution as compatible, it is more certain that a larger proportion of atheists will see evolution and atheism as compatible. I haven't heard of any atheists killing people for arguing in favor of evolution.
